Featherizer

I'm still in a bit of a shocked state as I just witnessed an atrocious event. For those of you who are easily disturbed, please refrain from reading this post.

________________________________________

I was walking home from the HAPN meeting today having just missed the bus. I was walking along Columbia, just outside of campus by the railroad tracks. I spotted a mother duck and her ducklings walking across the street. They were extremely cute and small and I couldn't help but smile. A car drove by, but dodged them just in time and I couldn't help but cringe as he neared them. I was helpless to do anything to save them as the limit is 60 km/h. As the car passed and no "squish" noises were heard, I let out a sigh. However, fate is a cruel mistress and she would have another car test the fates of those ducks. Fate was not so lenient this time. The car spotted the family of ducks a fraction of a second too late and all that was heard on that quiet street was the screeching of breaks, a popping noise, and then silence. The driver, realizing the devastation he just imposed, scurried away. A flurry of feathers trailed behind him as if trying to chase him down. Like I said earlier, I cannot describe the state I was in except for this: shocked. An uneasy wrenching of my stomach occurred and my eyes could not avert themselves away from the darkened mass of down. The worst had come to that family of ducks.

Not knowing what to do, I walked home in silence, mourning the loss of innocent animals. My readers, I hope that you would sympathize with me and give a moment of silence for the ducklings and mother duck. I hope none of you are too offended. I meant to put this post as a warning to prevent something like this from happening again.

House Bound for Father's Day

I was house bound this weekend. I spent most of Saturday driving around with my parents doing errands. While driving, I tested out my new Wayfarers which are pretty ballin' if I do say so myself. They're black with a metro map interior. I can't wait to show these bad boys off on campus. At any rate, my parents, my younger brother, and I decided to grab some lunch at Congee Queen. We ordered the seafood super bowl congee, their new Empress fried rice, shanghai noodles, and XO fried turnip patties. The meal was so good and it made me extremely glad to be home. I over ate as is the usual case when I go home. I suppose I'm fearful of how long it'll be before I get to savour this kind of food. Waterloo does have Chinese food, but it's nowhere close to Toronto.

Today, Sunday June 20th, is Father's Day. My older brother couldn't do dinner with the family, so we all headed out for dim sum instead. We got a table at Ginger and Onion, one of our favourite restaurants to eat at. It has been a while since I've had their dim sum and boy, I missed it. My family scarfed down the food that arrived at our table. We finished our meal and my older brother ended up picking up the cheque. The rest of the day was spent spending time with the family and visiting my grandfather's grave. I visited him the last time I came home, but since this was Father's day, my family agreed another visit was in order. I sat in the grass beside him, enjoying the summer air. Sadly, this was interrupted by my allergies. Having a fit of violent sneezes, I had to leave. We said our goodbyes and left for home.

I'm not sure what else to say. I want to thank my dad and grandpa for teaching me what it means to be a man and I hope someday that I'll be a great father too...

But for now, I'm wishing them a Happy Father's Day.

Would You Like Some Cake With That Butter?

Today, I woke up at 6:00 a.m. to do some studying for my psych quiz I would have later that morning. I finished reading the textbook earlier than expected and decided to make breakfast. I didn't have too many ingredients on hand, so I threw together a tomato, green onion, and mozzarella cheese omelette with bacon on the side. It turned out better than I expected. I can't remember the last time I woke up to eat breakfast, let alone eat it.

I began walking to the bus stop soon after, and to no surprise, missed it by a fraction of a second. Not wanting to miss my quiz, I power walked all the way towards campus and made it just in time for the beginning of the class. It was an interesting class as we were learning about vision, and the way in which our eyes perceive and our brains process. Nearing the end of the class and with the quiz approaching, I suddenly had a huge headache. I had trouble keeping my head lifted and began to see the room start to shift. When the quiz came along, I quickly scribbled in answers onto the scantron and headed home. Sadly, this headache caused me to miss my gym session with Lapin as well as my Microbiology class. When I got home, I quickly plopped into bed and popped some tylenol while at it. The effects took longer than I expected causing me some discomfort.

GreenGiant had been bugging me about helping him prepare his Banana Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting that he got from Recipezar. We gathered the ingredients and started to prepare it. After a few incorrect measurements and portioning, we managed to scramble together what seemed to be an extremely liquid batter. I then realized that the entire stick of butter I portioned had been used. Now this extra "bit" constituted a third of an increase in the overall butter content of the already saturated batter. We decided to go ahead seeing as we wasted plenty of time preparing it. The overall cake came out well, but I could just smell the extremely fattening goodness that was now in the cake. We let it cool in the freezer; flash cooling, as I call it. When it was time to ice the cake, even more butter was put into making the actual icing. After a brick of cream cheese, a half cup of butter, and three cups of icing sugar, the icing was ready.

We tried the cake, eager to see what the result was. GreenGiant found the cake to be pleasing where as I could taste and feel the actual fat content within our dessert. The overall product was a success in the sense that it was delicious, but perhaps so delicious that it was deadly. A small portion of this cake caused most of us to become lethargic. This was probably due to our bodies extra effort to digest this beast of saturated fat. I can just feel my arteries clog up as I write this blog and hopefully this cake won't lead to anything severe. Yes, it really is that bad. I suppose only time will tell.

And if time won't tell me, I suppose that stick of butter clogging my arteries will.

Bidding on Destiny

My microbiology midterm was on Tuesday. It went better than I expected, although I found the questions to be very tricky. I hate how professors place the "a and b", "b and c", "all of the above", or "none of the above" choices. I always feel that two of the answers COULD work, but one is more appropriate. This leads to me debating over which choice to make for a solid minute which just docks time from actually completing the entire test. Here's to hoping I made the correct choices.

Today was a rather slow day. I was kept up to periodic banging noises downstairs. I am confused as to the source of these strange sounds, but I suspect one of my housemates to be the cause. As to what they were doing, beats me. Sadly, this incessant banging left me tossing and turning until 3 in the morning. I believe it goes without saying that I did not wake up for class. Later that morning, I went down to talk to my housemates that also missed the lecture. It seems everyone was up. MegaCreep started his usual routine of getting ready which was in direct conflict of my routine. Sadly, he took 2 hours in the washroom getting ready. Another mystery that no one dares ask. After MegaCreep finished, it was time for class. I quickly rushed in and brushed my teeth, smoothed my hair, and sprayed a bit of cologne to cover my morning stench. Annoyed, I headed for the bus.

Class turned out to be understandable for once. I was surprised our math professor let us leave early. This gave me more time to reach my tutorial which proved to be a waste of time as the online quiz did not work. Disappointed with the waste of time, I headed home just in time to bid on a nerdy item on eBay. Surprisingly, I won after increasing the bid by a slight amount. I suppose it was destiny for me to have it.

In my rush to get to class and frustration at the amount of time in the washroom MegaCreep used, I forgot to take out my tilapia fillet for thawing. Thus, for dinner, I whipped up a bacon and meatball spaghetti. It turned out well for something that I threw together, but was missing that delicate touch to make it over the top delicious. Perhaps another time.

The rest today will be spent in my room reading my psychology textbook as I have a quiz tomorrow. Once again, I found out about it the day before leaving me enough time to cram in the necessary chapters. Although I'm missing the HAPN meeting, I'm sure Lapin will understand.

If not, I'll have to mess her up at the gym tomorrow. =]

Guys' Night Out

Yesterday was boys night out. My best bud, C, came up to visit as his parents had some business to attend to in Kitchener. Seeing as my whole house, Jolin, MegaCreep, GreenGiant, and PadFeet, were all present, we decided to head out for wings. We took a ride over to Weber and went into the Wild Wings there only to be overwhelmed with stares from a population of mostly Caucasians. Jolin cleverly stated that this must be the place they were all hiding. Once we were seated, we all checked the menu planning on what we should get. The waitress came over quicker than expected and took our drink orders. C, GreenGiant, and I all got MGD's while the other guys got water. What party poopers. Anyway, we settled on getting the cowboy, 100 wings and a max of four flavours. We quickly chimed in about which flavour we wanted and after a good ten minutes of debating, we settled on our choices: Smokey Gar Par, Texan Honey, Who's Your Daddy, and Bue Moonshine. The wings came out and we dug in. The wings, for the most part, were REALLY good. Padfeet and I were a little disappointed that the Who's Your Daddy wasn't spicy enough for our liking. It seemed a lot of the Frank's Extra Hot missed the wings and landed onto nothing. GreenGiant was thankful though as he liked the sweet taste of Teriyaki that accompanied it. At the end of our meal, we were left with 16 wings leading us to play the counting game. We could each count three consecutive numbers and whoever was left with the number 31 would have to eat a wing. The usual pattern ensued of placing all the wings onto one person. Sadly, threats of puking stopped this fun. We all finished the wings and left overly stuffed.

After dinner, we went back to play some Catan. C took GreenGiant's place, but the usual pattern took shape. Sadly, Jolin had some kind of Catan hate against me as I was stolen from 8 times by him that game. A new record. C ended up winning by default as he had to lead and it seemed as though he would win from the current board. C's parents came in to say hi and to check out the place that tidied earlier that day. Sadly, by the time they came, it seemed like it was in a state of ruin. It was good to see familiar faces and I hope to visit my home town soon.

In the meantime, I think another round of wings is in order. I'll start.

Calculated Failure

I know I haven't been posting lately and it's because it's midterm season here in Waterloo. All of us keeners, and not so keen students, are cramming in the lessons we failed to absorb while our professors rambled on about action potentials and nerual glia.

Anyways, I went to the gym with Lapin, now to be known as DirtyElbow (yes, no space), on Tuesday where we worked out. I suppose my lack of new music caused me to be in a little bit of a slump. It got me through the elliptical, but I just wasn't in the mood to lift weights. After a rather weak set of chest, abs, and back workouts, we left.

Wednesday proved to be even less interesting. I missed math class in order to finish up a biology assignment worth 4%--whoopie---that required much more effort to finish than seemed necessary. My entire house was in the same predicament, but we ended up finishing. In fact, we even had a little break and played some card games. After the tutorial and handing in of assignments, we headed home. I wanted to get a bagel from Timmies, but alas, they were all out. I was about to go across campus to satiate my hunger, but my housemates protested and we all headed home. The meeting was cancelled for HAPN as well as our Drop-In sports event due to rain.

All of Thursday and beginning of Friday were spent in solitude studying calculus by flashlight. Well, in my dungeon room, the lighting would make it seem so. I grabbed all the concepts and found the practice midterm to be fairly reasonable. When the actual time came around to writing the midterm, I blanked. I quickly scribbled down what I could and with each question, I seemed to get more and more desperate. It didn't help that the midterm was more difficult than the one posted online. My entire class left the examination room in a bit of a rut. Way to kick off the weekend. The good news was that PadFeet, another one of my housemates, is coming up to Waterloo this weekend.

Surely, this will bring about good times and perhaps some headaches.

Killer Hair Cuts

Last Saturday, I headed downtown to get my haircut. I decided to go with a Jake Gyllenhaal kind of look (minus the scruff as I can't grow any). My dad drove me to Fairview mall where I took the subway down to Bloor. From there, it was only a little while before I arrived at House of Lords. The music blaring, flashing lights, and long line were indications of it's continued popularity amoung young Torontonians. I entered and asked for my usual hair dresser. He seemed a little busy with one customer, so I added my name to a list of drop ins. A pregnant Indian lady took me to her section when my name was called and asked what I wanted. I showed her my GQ magazine with Jake's face plastered over it. She asked if I really was okay with it because it was really short. I agreed as she didn't know that this was considered my norm and that my hair at it's present state was extremely long. She recommended a three on the sides and scissors on the top and I agreed as that's what I had been planning for. She buzzed away at my hair and commented on the dye job. She seemed impressed that it came from a do-it-yourself kit. Quickly, the dye faded away as more and more buzzing went on. Sadly, my hair was already short when I dyed it, so now the roots on the back and sides are what show. After twenty minutes or so, she was done and I was happy with the result. I tipped her a little more than my usual as I was glad she didn't butcher my hair. If she isn't still preggers, I may come back to her.

I texted my friends to see what the plan was for tonight and we agreed that we would keep our events local. I headed back onto the subway and after a bit of detour, arrived back at Fairview where they would pick me up. Seeing as I had time to kill, I scoured the mall. I didn't see many things I liked, besides jackets. One of my best friends always comments on how I have so many, but nothing to wear under them. I totally agree with her. Resisting the temptation, I sat down near the food court on those benches in the halls and awaited their arrival. When they arrived, we headed to get dinner at an AYCE sushi place called Yang's Kitchen. We hadn't been there in a while, so it was good to go back. The food was good, for an AYCE, but what really astounded us was the service. I swear, the severs were like ninjas, removing finished dishes and empty bowls faster than the eye could see from the surrounding tables; ours included. Our night ended off with us catching a movie, Killers, starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl. Despite it's extremely poor rating on IMBd, we all enjoyed it. Maybe it was just the mood we were in... And I'm a sucker for chick flicks.

We all decided it was time for bed as we all had plans the next day. They dropped me off and I hugged them each goodbye as I didn't know when I'd be home next.

Good food, good times, and great friends. Who could ask for more?

Apples to Apples

Friday night, hang out with my friends from high school. You may know us as Rhombus.

I was supposed to head downtown to get my hair cut, and hopefully, to do a little shopping. Sadly, due some complications with people's schedules and lack of planning, it didn't happen. I rearranged my Saturday schedule to compensate.

C, my best friend, picked me up around 5 to go out for coffee. We headed to the Starbucks near my house and I ordered a skinny vanilla latte. I thought it was doomed to fail, but I believe my palette has become more sensitive, making it not seem so bad. We chatted a bit before heading over to pick up the other two, Chewbeccs and Mire. We had a hard time deciding where to go for dinner and it took a relatively large number of texts to several different people to finally settle on Crabby Joe's. We got a table at the bar, without a wait, and looked at the menus. We noticed that the menus were sticky and not to mention the table. We all questioned the cleanliness of the establishment, avoiding the "dirty" topics. The waiter that served us was rather buff and Chewbeccs found him rather attractive. He heard a bit of our shinnanigans, probably leading him to believe we were immature. It was time to order and I decided on a Grilled Chicken Club on foccacia. To drink, I ordered an appletini as martinis were the special of the night. I ordered, a little embarassed. The food came and not to sound snobby, but it was alright. The foccocia was good, but the chicken was a little bland. The fries that came with the meal were good, but I wished they were fresher and more crisp. The appletini smelled so good as one of my favourite scents is green apple. It tasted pretty good as well, the alcohol almost completely masked. Overall, I was happy with my choices.

After dinner, Rhombus headed towards the park near my house only to stumble upon a different one! We didn't know this park existed and were eager to explore it. We quickly ran towards a spinning top looking jungle gym structure and climbed inside. It turns out that the whole structure spins and we ended up spinning our friends who were sitting inside. The rest of the park was normal, having a steering wheel, swings, slides, and what not. We questioned why every park had a steering wheel as it really served no purpose. What were the kids steering? We mused this idea and finally agreed it was the entire park. Apparently, this park had a splash zone, a completely new concept we've never seen. We wanted to turn it on, but the button was capped off to stop kids like us from causing a ruckus.

As we stood there, a man got out from a van and slowly walked towards us. A little frightened, we moved further away, but he just slowly crept over. We waited to see what he wanted, ready to flee should he charge. He said a quick hello and then asked us where the skate park was. Our hearts racing, we told him it was the park west of where we were. He thanked us and left. Having our hairs on end, we decided to get some ice cream to calm them down. We arrived at Marble Slab soon after and went inside, glad they closed a little later. I ordered their premade Caramel Apple mix which was good. We enjoyed our ice cream on the curb until it started to rain. I suppose it was a sign that many of us needed to get home as we had things to do early the next morning.

I suppose a creeper, some ice cream, and an appletini can cure depression.
That, and good company.

BUS-ted

As you may have known, I wasn't in a particularly good mood last week. It could have been due to the weather, but nonetheless, I knew how to deal with it; to go home. Last weekend, I went back to my home town to hang out with my friends and to get my hair cut as it's grown a little long. I left Thursday afternoon because of my poor mood only to end up waiting in a huge downpour for a bus that never came. While waiting at the station, I had the urge to just walk in the huge downpour. I'm not sure what caused this, but it seemed like a good idea. Using my better judgment, I didn't run out to get soaked and possibly become sick ruining my weekend. The people at the station were becoming irritable as the bus was already half an hour late, so they sent another bus to get us to Toronto. I got a seat near the middle of the bus and popped in my ear buds. Drowned in my own world, I stared out the window pondering life away.

Once in Toronto, I headed over to Union Station to take the Go Bus back. I bought a ticket using the machines and waited for the bus at platform 47, the platform I caught the Go last. An hour later, I realized that none of the buses were arriving there that led back home, but were all expresses to Hamilton. I was extremely hungry at this point because I had only had a bagel all day. I decided to purchase some candy from the store, gobbling it down while staring at the bus schedule screen. I noticed that the Go Bus headed to my town was arriving at platform 26. Of course, I had no clue where this platform was. I was completely oblivious to the other side of Union. After ten minutes, I decided to explore, heading over to the subway portion. I saw signs pointing me towards the correct platform. Sadly, by the time I reached it, the bus had left and I would have to wait another half hour. Starved, I headed back to the subway portion and purchased a Big Mac meal from McDonalds. I scarfed it down while some strangers watched me. I pretended not to notice. Finally, the schedule popped up. The bus going to my town was going to arrive at PLATFORM 47. How ironic is that the platform I waited at for roughly an hour and a half was the one I had to sit at in order to get home. I got onto the Go bus and headed home.

Rain Rain Go Away.

I don't know if it was the weather or the hardcore ponder session I had last night, but I felt horrible yesterday. I missed my first bio class, not wanting to get up. I soon realized that I had to head to campus to finish up my lab. After getting there on time, none of my lab partners had shown up. This irked me a little. Although the overall technique took me roughly 15 minutes to do, I would have loved to have some company. After class, I headed over to Timmy's to try and get breakfast as I was really craving an everything bagel. Knowing my luck, there was none left and it took me 5 minutes waiting in line to figure that out. I decided to get a sesame bagel instead seeing as that was the only other choice available. I handed over my Watcard, but it got declined. Apparently, I've used up my flex dollars. A little embarrassed, I handed over a $5 bill and then waited. As I walked to the bus, I munched on the rather bland carb packed disc.

When I got home, I was too lazy to make anything for lunch. I ended up watching a couple episodes of an anime that I've recently got into. I headed back to campus at 1:30 for my math class and biology tutorial. As the bus arrived on campus, a heavy downpour began. Not having an umbrella as it mysteriously broke a couple of weeks earlier, I got drenched on my way to class. We didn't learn much and I found it a waste of time. My friends and I decided to play a version of pictionary while our professor talked. Class ended sooner than expected leaving me time to get to my tutorial. I worked on my assignment that is due next week, not getting very far. I got my assignment back from last week, a little disappointed.

I decided not to have dinner and just to head over to the HAPN meeting, which I was not looking forward to. The meetings are at 9:30 p.m. which is a pain because I don't have any night classes and the buses stop running to campus. As I walked to the meeting, dreading going, I went into a gas station to pick up a pack of gum hoping that it would pick up my mood. Nope. The meeting wasn't any better as I didn't feel much was accomplished or needed to be done. I walked home with Lapin, telling her about my sour mood. When I got home, I talked to M on the phone for a while and then went to bed.

Let's hope for a 180 degree change.

Snobby Misconceptions

I suppose I'm in a contemplative mood right now. I've noticed that most people take what as I say as negative. I believe they see me as someone who is extremely judgmental, but I don't believe I am that kind of person. I'm not saying that I do not pass judgment because that would just be a lie. However, that is not to say that I look down upon everyone and everything 24/7.

Although you readers may not know me, what am I doing wrong? Do I really give off an aura of snobiness? Thinking this over just adds to my predicament as it's making my mood rather negative.

I suppose what I'm trying to get at is, what can I change about myself to give off the right perception? I do try and phrase my sentences in such a way that it wouldn't be hurtful, so I suppose that's out.

Please help me out, whoever's out there.

P.S. Did you find that snobby?

Stealers of Catan

Not to sound arrogant, but being intelligent does have its down sides. Tonight, my housemates, Jolin and Green Giant, and I played a strategy board game known as Settlers of Catan. The game is all about expanding your territory like risk, but instead you have to gather resources in order to build settlements, roads, and ultimately, to obtain 10 victory points. As we played, I gave out suggestions to players of how to better strategies only to be neglected and stolen from. Apparently, I'm considered a threat even when backed into a corner with no possibility of winning. Jolin has been the victor of most of the games played due to people ignorantly trading with him. I just wish that the game would go on with more strategies such as the use of trading ports rather than crazed trading and gang beating one player. I suppose it's too much to ask for, but it makes my playment less enjoyable. I really do like the game and it's fun hanging out with my housemates, but is it too much to ask for a little bit of leniency?

I may be thinking too much on the subject. Actually, I probably am, but I really wanted to rant about it to someone. Sadly, my blog seems to be the only one I can talk to at this hour. So, whoever is reading out there, what do you think I should do? Shall I stop playing the game? Suck it up and just go on with my life? Ugh, I'm not even sure what to do anymore. Perhaps I should just stick to a game I can win because it requires strategies from BOTH parties...

Not to mention there is no "ganking" or trading to be done.

Motion of the Ocean

Lapin and I went out to The Grill to get lunch where we split an angus burger and fries for fear of getting ridiculous cramps while working out later on. The fries came in a white box usually seen with fish and chips. The portion size was large which was good as we were going to share that as well. The burger came and it was decently sized and was topped with ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. I wanted to place more toppings on, but knowing Lapin's topping tastes, I decided otherwise. As we ate, we both agreed that the meal was extremely salty. The fries seemed to be covered in it. I even texted Spiderman saying that I had the taste of ocean in my mouth.

After lunch, we caught the bus to go to the gym. We quickly got ready and headed for the ellipticals. I started earlier than Lapin as she ventured to find some disinfectant. I began at a quick jog and slowed down after a while. With my tunes in my ears and a clear mindset, nothing seemed to slow me down as I kept a good constant pace for the half hour we ran. I even attempted to do the highest elevation possible which turned out to be a work out and a half in itself. Lifting my knees past my hips was not an easy task especially when trying to maintain a constant speed. I decided work on my arms and shoulders today moving towards the appropriate machines. Once again, I had to show Lapin how these machines worked. After a short session of pumping some iron, we left the gym as Lapin had to study for her test.

As we walked to the bus stop, we chatted about what we wanted from our work outs. My goals consisted of losing 10 pounds and adding a little bit of meat onto my derriere. We both laughed at this as we agreed that Asians usually have flat bottoms. Hopefully, by the end of the summer, at least one of these will come true.

Better yet, let that weight lost go towards behind. Not all of it of course.

Small Frye

Yesterday was rather uneventful. I scrambled to finish my lab which really didn't take that long. Around 3:15 p.m. it was all printed off and ready to go. Seeing as my lab was at 7, I decided to make an extremely early dinner. I made fried chicken using panko bread crumbs with coleslaw and corn. It wasn't bad for a rushed sort of thrown together kind of meal. As I ate my meal in my room while listening to some gLee cover songs, one of my housemates passed by my door and paused there for what seemed like an extraordinary amount of time. It began to creep me out and it definitely didn't help when he walked into my room and asked what I was listening to. I gave him a nondescriptive answer hoping he'd get the message and leave. Alas, that was not that case as he marched further into my room and walked straight to my iPhone checking the screen. Luckily, the screen was stuck on the text I had recently sent Lapin. He marched out of my room as I pondered what had just happened.

Around 6:00 I headed to school to start my lab with Lapin, hopeful that the pipette fail wouldn't alter our results too much. Overall, the lab went well with MINIMAL back talk from the TA's. Sadly, there was one instance of fail as Lapin had placed the water proof membrane filter on the wrong side causing the chamber to fill with water. Hopefully all will turn out well as I go in to count the colonies tomorrow without Lapin who apparently has "class."

We ended up finishing the lab early, as usual, and I headed home to attempt to finish studying for my Psychology midterm I had today. I was a little distracted and ended up working on some side projects. I finished studying by 1:00 and then went to bed hoping to wake up early to do some review. Sadly, I slept past two of my alarms, 6:00 and 7:00, waking up at 7:45 a.m. I got ready for school and quickly read up on the slides that the professor provided. I got to school on time after missing one bus, walking a bit down the street only to miss another. I arrived in class, ready to write my midterm. Overall, the midterm was not bad, but I suspect I'm getting a mark near 80%. I suppose it's relatively good for the amount of studying I had done.

I now sit in my Microbiology class writing this blog waiting to head out to lunch with Lapin before we head to the gym. I'm currently craving fries so we'll be headed to The Grill.

I suppose my binge of salty satisfaction will be countered by my workout.
