This weekend I decided to go home to try to continue my "summer break." Sadly, the weather was absolutely dreadful. I left Friday afternoon after my classes had finished happy to find out that my tutorials didn't start until the following week. One of my housemates whom I went to high school with asked for a ride home as well. As you know, I had the car this week so it was no problem.
The ride home was packed with traffic on parts of the highway so we decided to take Highway 407, a tolled road, which didn't prove to be much better the closer we got to home. We decided to exit in Vaughn and take some smaller roads home, but it seems many cars had the same idea. After having an adventure in Vaughn trying to find the appropriate small road to go down--this actually required many guessed turns and continue straights before actually getting there on our first try--we headed down where traffic was slight. Overall it was a smooth journey.
While home, my parents treated me out to meals a lot as they believe that I wouldn't be able to get this delicious food in Waterloo and I suppose they'd be right. Most times I end up having my fill and then some while at home because I'm afraid that the next opportunity to head home is far into the future.
On Saturday, my mom had seen that lobsters were on sale at the supermarket which led us to thinking that it was a good idea to eat in. They headed out early in the morning, a little drizzle heading towards us. They returned late in the afternoon and when I opened the door, I realized how bad it was outside. The trees were bowing due to the strength of the wind while wet snow and rain pelted any surface it could find. I quickly motioned my parents into the house baffled by the weather outside. I knew there was to be a storm this weekend, but I would never have expected this. I originally had an idea to hang out with Spiderman and Lapin, but the weather was not permitting.
Once inside, my mom began the preparations for a gourmet meal at home. She made a surf and turf meal of baked garlic cheese lobsters and grilled steaks with a side of California veggies. The meal was delicious and I wished that I wasn't a starving student so I could eat like that all the time. My mom chuckled and told me what she always tells me: Get a good job and make a lot of money, and maybe you can one day. Good advice I suppose.

Today, Sunday, is Mother's Day. For breakfast my family went out for dim sum at a restaurant we hadn't been to in a while. Although it was not our usual spot, it was still a decent meal. I was surprisingly full for the amount I ate. After dim sum my family headed for mass at Chinese Martyrs Catholic Church, the place I alter served for ten years. We hadn't been in quite some time as it was a little far from our house making us opt for the English churches nearby. I suffered through a Mandarin mass which I understood nothing of except for the normal sit, stand, and kneel cues. In order to ease my boredum I folded an origami balloon out of one of the offertory envelopes. Once mass was done, we left, passing by the stands where they were selling flowers for Mother's Day. I asked my mom if she wanted one, but she said no.
As we were about to leave my mom suggested that instead of flowers we get her something else. I agreed without asking what it was and I regret it. My mom wanted a leather jacket. Now, if you know my family, we don't buy pleather or anything fake, so this jacket was going to put a dent in wallet for sure. Luckily, my mom knew of an outlet store and had an idea of which jacket she wanted. We headed over to the outlet and browsed a bit before settling on a black leather jacket. I suppose it had a bomber-style to it and I instructed my mom on how to properly wear one. She said it was too tight, but I insisted it was just right. My father and I suggested that she alter the sleeves as they were too long, but she complained that it would cost more money. However, we pointed out that what would be the point of buying something expensive if it didn't fit quite right. After spending twenty five dollars more for the alterations, I ended up paying $200 for that jacket. I realize this isn't a bad price, but for an unemployed student, it's deadly. My mom was happy so I guess that's all that mattered.
I have class on Monday meaning I have to head back to Waterloo. My parents already planned that we go to the States for shopping on the May "2-4" weekend which gives me something to look forward to. Something else to look forward to is a possible lunch with Lapin tomorrow. I've been craving unagi for a while and I'm hoping to get some.
I suppose I'll end off with this. To my mom,
Thanks for having the courage to push another of us kids out of you
after having already going through child labour once. I love you.
Happy Mother's Day.
